Our Beliefs

The Bible

We believe that the Bible is what it claims to be, the inspired word of God. (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Therefore it is our guide regarding salvation, the church and everyday life.

Salvation

When it comes to salvation we believe what the Bible teaches about salvation.

We believe that man has a sin problem (Romans 5:12), but thankfully God has a plan (1 Peter 1:20). Through his wonderful grace (Ephesians 2:8) and His love for us (John 3:16), God sent Jesus to pay the price for our sins, something we could never do on our own (Romans 6:23). It is God’s plan that through the goodness of sending Christ to the cross, that He might draw people to Himself (John 12:32). We tell the story of God’s saving grace through the Gospel (Romans 1:15-16).

When someone hears the Gospel, or reads it for themselves (Romans 10:17), they are faced with decisions. They can choose to believe it, or not (Acts 4:1-4). They can choose to proclaim their faith or hide it (John 12:42-43). They can choose to continue their current lifestyle by living for themselves, or they can choose to repent, and live for God (Acts 3:19Acts 17:30). They can choose to stay outside of Christ, and in their sins, or they can choose to have their sins washed away by the blood of Jesus in baptism. (Galatians 3:27Romans 6:1-6Acts 22:161 Peter 3:21).

We believe that God wants everyone to go to Heaven (2 Peter 3:9).

We believe that God has given Christians the mission of reaching those who have yet to hear the Gospel. (Matthew 28:18-20)

The Church

When God saves people the Bible tells us He adds them to the church (Acts 2:47). When the word church is used in the Bible, it is always used to refer to a group of Christians, either all Christians, or a local group of Christians, like the church at Ephesus, the church at Corinth, or the church at Birdville.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 16:18 that He would build His church. Our goal is to be that church, Christ’s church. That’s why we call ourselves the church of Christ.

In trying to be that church, we look at the Bible to find out what Jesus intended His church to be like. The Bible tells us how we as Christians are supposed to function together as the church. How we are to worship, when we are to meet together, how we are taught and led. Thankfully, God did not leave all of this for us to discover on our own. He has told us everything that church is supposed to do, in the Bible.

Everyday Life

We believe that not only does the Bible guide us in matters about the church, but that it also teaches us how to live our lives on a daily basis (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The Bible is full of guidance about the family and marriage, about the workplace, about conflict and forgiveness, about finances about all the things we deal with on a daily basis.

All of these beliefs work together to form our mission as the Birdville church of Christ.
